MORE PERSONAL HISTORY
My mother wasn’t supposed to be able to have children. She kept trying anyway. After 6 unsuccessful pregnancies in 7 years her miracle baby was finally born – me – on September the 15th, 1954. Ironically that’s the same day of Marylin Monroe’s famous white dress subway scene shot in New York City making the film, ‘The Seven Year Itch.’ I wanted to be there but Mom said No.
There were a lot of No’s for me growing up an only child in the small town of Wagoner, Oklahoma in the 60’s. But the two big Yes’s were; From Mom – ‘Yes you can take piano lessons’ (at age 5) – and From Dad, ‘Yes I’ll take you hunting with me.’ (at age 6) Hence, the two great loves of my life were born. Both have led me to a lot of success in my life. And in similar ways.
I’ve only been married once (over 30 years) to one great specimen of a woman, Darlene. Together we live on a sprawling 20 acre estate 17 miles from downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma. Darlene’s days are filled with raising 6 grand children, all brothers and sisters – 14, 10, 8, 6, 5, and 2. There’s too many for me to remember all their names. Oh, we have 6 other grand children too. But for some reason they’ve decided to live with their parents. We had 5 children of our own. They are all a tremendous blessing and we thank God for each and every one of them but sometimes I feel I’m being punished for getting to be an only child.
What I really do for a living is the same thing I did as a young man playing the piano. And it’s something I’m pretty good at. I get to entertain people. And when you’ve got that in your blood, that’s just about as good as it gets.
As a piano player I’ve had the privilege of personally accompanying several Miss Oklahoma’s and several national celebrities. I’ve also had the chance to entertain University Presidents, Governors, Senators and do this in over 30 different states. I’ve played to thousands of people in groups and as a solo artist.
As a hunter producing over 60 full featured hunting videos and spending 13 years on Outdoor Channel, I’ve had the privilege of reaching untold millions of different sportsmen and getting to teach and entertain an entire generation of hunters on ‘how to’ be more successful and have a good time doing it.
I’ve lived a blessed life and certainly have to give God all the credit for the abilities He’s given me. And while I look in the mirror and realize I’m getting older, my heart is quick to remind me – it’s important not to just run the race but finish the race. The long and short of it is – I’ve got a lot of race left to run. And the rest of the race begins…in the morning.
